Columbia University Sexual Violence Response invites you to join us for Peace and Presence, a series of diverse holistic wellness workshops for student survivors and co-survivors of sexual trauma and intimate partner violence. These sessions will explore non-verbal and experiential healing techniques, self-calming tools, and guide you in incorporating mindfulness into your daily lives.

Invite: Meet Culinary Innovator and Chef Ferran Adria (Spain)

LANG INNOVATION TALK: 
Meet Culinary Pioneer Ferran Adrià: Chef, Author and Founder of the elBullifoundation

WHAT:  Ferran Adrià presents Coffee Sapiens – Innovation through Understanding, a well-timed event on all things coffee (before the International Coffee Day, Sept. 29).

WHO:  Ferran Adrià joined the staff of elBulli in 1984 and became a foremost innovative culinary pioneer for introducing molecular gastronomy to the world of fine cuisine. elBulli won three Michelin stars, along with many other accolades, and is now being transformed into a food laboratory and a museum that’s open to the public, the long-awaited El Bulli 1846 (named for the 1,846 different dishes that were created throughout El Bulli’s history). Adrià’s new mission to study and catalogue the entire body of world culinary knowledge has brought him to New York, with his publication of Coffee Sapiens (Phaidon), a multimedia project created by Lavazza and the elBullifoundation, with the aim of promoting experimentation and innovation in the gastronomic field. This opera omnia on coffee is one of the first pillars of what will be the most complete database of the Occidental fine dining restaurant industry, Bullipedia.

Go Ask Alice! Needs Your Help

Dear Students,

Are you familiar with Go Ask Alice! — Columbia’s award winning health question and answer internet resource? Alice! Health Promotion (a part of Columbia Health) is hoping to hear from Columbia students about their thoughts on site’s health information.

To share your thoughts, we invite you to participate in an upcoming focus group session. Registration can be made online: http://bit.ly/GoAskAliceFG

After registering, a member of the Alice! Health Promotion staff will follow up with you via email to confirm your registration and share any additional details.

More information about the focus group sessions:

  • We will be hosting a number of focus group sessions starting in March and April.
  • Participants must be a currently registered student at Columbia University or an affiliate institution, be familiar with Go Ask Alice!, and able to speak to their previous experience using the resource.
  • Each focus group session will last approximately 2 hours. We ask that all participants are able to stay for the duration of the session.
  • All of the sessions will take place during a meal time and food will be provided. Participants may indicate any dietary restrictions and preferences as they register for a focus group session.
  • Each participant will receive a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card as a thank you following the completion of the focus group.

We ask that those interested in participating register at least 1 week prior to the date they have selected to participate.

Please join us for the first in a series of conversations with distinguished colleagues from the Emeritus Professors in Columbia community. This EPIC Conversation is co-sponsored by the Columbia Journalism School.
Victor Navasky chairs the Columbia Journalism Review. He was the George Delacorte Professor of Magazine Journalism at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, where he directed the Delacorte Center for Magazine Study. He has served as editor, publisher and now publisher emeritus of The Nation, which he joined in 1978.
In the 1970’s Navasky served as an editor on The New York Times Magazine. In the 1960’s he was founding editor and publisher of Monocle, a “leisurely quarterly of political satire” (that meant it came out twice a year). His books include Kennedy Justice and Naming Names, which won a National Book Award, and (with Christopher Cerf) The Experts Speak: The Definitive Guide to Authoritative Misinformation, and also Mission Accomplished! Or How We Won the War In Iraq, A Matter of Opinion, which won the 2005 George Polk Book Award and the 2006 Ann M. Sperber Prize, and of which The New York Times wrote, “Anybody who has ever dreamed of starting a magazine, or worried that the country is losing the ability to speak seriously to itself, should read A Matter of Opinion.”
Navasky is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Most recently he has published The Art of Making Magazines: On Being an Editor and Other Views from the Industry, edited by Victor S. Navasky and Evan Cornog, and The Art of Controversy: Political Cartoons and Their Enduring Power (Knopf, 2013).
Navasky will be in conversation with Michael Rosenthal, Roberta and William Campbell Professor Emeritus of the Humanities, another distinguished Columbia author and scholar, and an EPIC steering committee member.
