Join the Columbia Student Survey Leadership Team and Become a Survey Ambassador

Want to be part of a new Columbia-wide initiative to improve life on campus while putting new leadership skills into action? Apply now to be a Survey Ambassador and be part of the inaugural Columbia student survey leadership team.

The team will help brand, market and spread the word about this spring’s survey, which was created by students, faculty and staff across Columbia to focus on student well-being. Why have a student-well-being survey? To learn – about campus climate, mental health, sexual respect and more – and to take this knowledge and contribute to positive change for all students at Columbia. And – by doing this survey, Columbia students will be part of a global mental health initiative with our survey partners at the World Health Organization. Additionally, this survey will help us learn more about student well-being on campus with the goal of creating positive change at Columbia and support an environment where every student can thrive.

Responsibilities:
-Host at least one event or activity to promote the survey in your school or student organization.
-Participate in campus media campaigns

-Design and carry out a survey social media strategy
-Be part of a select set of meetings with other Leadership Team members and senior Columbia staff and faculty

Summer Teaching Positions Available:

Teach Reading to Students of All Ages This Summer

  • Earn more than $6,000 during the summer. Teachers typically earn between $500 and $800 per week while teaching.
  • Gain over 500 hours of teacher-training and teaching experience with a variety of age groups.

The Institute of Reading Development is seeking candidates for summer 2017 teaching positions. We seek applicants with an undergraduate degree or higher from any discipline. We provide a paid training program and comprehensive on-going support.

Fellowship Opportunity: AC4 Graduate Student Fellowship

The AC4 Fellowship Program engages students and faculty who are doing interdisciplinary research/ practice with focus on conflict resolution and peacebuilding, to cultivate constructive conflict management and sustainable peace, and to support students to think critically about issues of peace and sustainability. The Graduate Fellowship provides funding to students at Columbia University, linking across disciplines, cultural lenses and methodologies to further theory, research and practice on peace and conflict at Columbia and across the globe.

How To Apply

Online application will open Dec 19th and will be accepted until February 17, 2017 (11:59 EST).

Applicants must submit:

  • A Proposal (no more than 3-pages), describing proposed project;
  • Estimated Budget, itemizing how the funding would be used (see form below);
  • Faculty Sponsor, with faculty signature on approval form (see form below);
  • Letter of Recommendation, signed and on institutional letterhead;
  • Brief CV or resume (up to 3 pages); and
  • Letter of Sponsorship for internship proposals, signed and on institutional letterhead.

Applicants must be current Columbia University graduate level students in order to be considered.

ICJF Seeking Entries

The International Center for Journalists, with the support of S&P Global is launching a new reporting contest to give journalists the opportunity to report on the accomplishments and tribulations of being a minority woman entrepreneur.

The program will offer grants between $1,000 and $5,000 to up to ten successful applicants. Selected applicants will receive the funds needed to cover the costs of their projects and advice from expert media mentors to support their projects’ development. The top three published stories will also receive cash prizes ($1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place, and $250 for 3rd place).

When do story projects need to be completed by?

All story projects must be completed between December 1, 2016 and February 15, 2017.

Program Dates:
November 7 – 27, 2016: Call for project proposals.
November 27, 2016: Last day to submit project proposal.
December 5, 2016: ICFJ announces selected applicants.
December 5, 2016 – January 31, 2017: Selected applicants conduct research, reporting, and create multimedia/interactive content. Selected applicants receive funds and advice from mentors.
February 1 – 15, 2017: Projects are published and/or broadcasted.
February 15, 2017: Last day to submit published and/or broadcasted stories. Final financial reports are due.

What kind of story projects are we looking for?

Applicants can pitch story projects ranging from one woman’s story to nationwide trends on the issue. Applicants can focus their project on any geographical area in the United States.

What makes a successful application?

Successful applicants will take a fresh look at the role minority women play in business across the United States. They will use graphics, social media, web interactives, new technology (such as 360 video) or other innovative tools to bring more media attention to minority women business owners.

What costs do the funds cover?

The funds are meant to cover costs associated with your story project. This includes all costs incurred in designing, developing and implementing your project. The applicant can use funds to cover the costs of designers and tech support, as needed. The funds do not cover salary or honorarium for the applicant. The applicant must submit a detailed budget. Budgets must be realistic and reasonable. Successful applicants will have to submit a final financial report at the end of the reporting period.

INVITE: Patmos Documentary Workshop

About the Workshop

The International Film Festival of Patmos IFFP and SugarHigh Films are, for the second time, organising the Patmos Documentary Workshop for emerging filmmakers.

Successful applicants will spend 2 weeks on the Greek islands, working in teams of 3 to each create a 10 minute documentary portrait that will be screened on the closing night of the festival.

The project consists of three phases:

A. Research & Development – remote / online
B. Filming at the Greek islands of Patmos, Kos, Leros, Ikaria and Agathonisi
C. Post production, seminars and Patmos int. film festival

After the summer, the participants’ footage will be reworked by Sugar High Films into a single, feature-length documentary called The Faces of Immigration [Working Title]. This modular, collaborative, feature length documentary will then be released at international festivals, will premier in Patmos 2017 and will be broadcast on international television channels, including Sundance Channel and OTE TV.

The workshop was founded in 2013, with the intention of bringing together young filmmakers in order to create a new, exciting kind of documentary production method. By partaking in the workshop, participants will leave with sharpened skills, international contacts, an industry credit for a widely distributed feature and a great experience.

duPont Awards – Student Volunteers Needed

Dear Students,

The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards are looking for student volunteers to assist with the awards ceremony and panels being held on Spring Prep Day.

Volunteers will be responsible for greeting and ushering guests the evening of the ceremony (1/20), and will assist with technological and logistical needs at the panels during Spring Prep Day (1/21).

*You will be required to attend an orientation on Monday, Jan. 19, and work the entire duration of all events for which you’ve signed up.

Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated an interest in audio-visual reporting. All volunteers will be able to attend the ceremony.

The duPont-Columbia Awards Events

Tues., Jan. 20: duPont-Columbia Award Ceremony, Low Library, 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm.  (The reception begins at 6:30 pm and the ceremony seating will take place at 7:30.  We will need you to arrive ahead of time to help with on-site logistics.)

Weds., Jan. 21:  Winners’ Circle Panels as part of Spring Prep Day, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm approx. Topics will include digital/interactive journalism, documentaries in emerging models, local investigative practices and special one on one interviews with a few of our winners.

AC4 Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunity

Apply by February 13, 2015 for chance to win $3,000 to fund research.

 

Each year, the Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict, and Complexity (AC4) funds select Columbia University graduate students conducting interdisciplinary research in areas addressing conflict, violence, sustainable development and peace. In 2015, AC4 will fund 10 students for up to $3,000 and one team of students for up to $6,000.

Two of the 10 students will be awarded these funds in support of an internship. Team applicants must present a truly interdisciplinary research proposal. Students may not
apply to both. Projects might include, but are not limited to: doctoral students’ dissertation research, master’s students’ thesis research, or capstone projects.

Eligibility and Restrictions:
Applicants must be graduate students of Columbia University enrolled in degree programs, and be conducting interdisciplinary research/practice-based projects relating to conflict, violence, sustainable development and/or peace. In addition, fellows are required to spend these monies by December 15, 2015. Please note: all current MS, MA & PhD students  are eligible.
