OFFER: ASJA Membership

Dear Students,

American Society of Journalists and Authors membership is limited to professional independent writers and nonfiction book authors. Becoming an ASJA member is a mark of professional achievement; that’s why it’s never been easy to join.

But once you have, ASJA membership can take you farther. Our members share expertise, ideas, opportunities, and the inside information critical to success in a constantly changing environment. Our member-to-member rights and fees database, contracts and grievance guidance, and diverse educational programs will give you the confidence and connections to grow your career.

If you’ve thought about joining in the past but didn’t think you were eligible because of the kind of work you do, we invite you to take another look and see the changes we’ve made. Here are some specifics:

  • Custom content. Have you written big pieces for large corporations, associations, the government? Do you write frequently for clients through Contently, Skyword, other content marketing agencies? As long as you can verify authorship and payment (such as with a contract, letter of assignment, or similar), custom work counts toward qualification.
  • Staff work can count for as many as half of the submitted credits. If you were on staff at a media outlet and are now focused on freelancing, staff-written work can help you meet ASJA’s qualifying standard.
  • Self-published books that have reached substantial sales benchmarks, won awards, and/or been reviewed by recognized third parties, may now be considered qualifying.
  • A new, lower application fee. It’s now only $25 to open a new application. If you’ve applied before no fee is due! And if you enter promo code 2015AO when you apply, you’ll save a further $25 on a new membership when you join.

There is more detail on our website. Take advantage of these waning days of summer, and see how your career can improve with the support of your professional colleagues.

I look forward to welcoming you as a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors!
