We are pleased to invite you to a special presentation of UNCENSORED, a new documentary by filmmakers Stephanie Martinez and Maura Ugarte. Through the lives of three Colombian journalists, UNCENSORED recounts the peril journalists endured while covering Colombia’s narcoterrorism violence in the 1980s during the reign of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel, the 1990s during the rise of corruption in the military and 2000s during a behind-closed-doors oppressive administration. Hope to see you there!

We would love it if you could join us in March for Women’s eNews “Women’s History Month Walking Tour,” which kicks off this Sunday, March 1, at 11 a.m. (Details below). The tours will also take place every Sunday in March at 11 a.m. Betsy Wade ’52 and James Boylan teamed up for the research and the writing to develop the tour, so I know it will be first-rate!

 The March 1, 2015, tour begins at 11:00 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. Meet in the lobby of 6 Barclay Street, New York, NY, 10007. Tour tickets are $20; seniors $15; students free.

On Sunday, March 1, at 4 p.m., Women’s eNews will host a screening of  “Iron-Jawed Angels,”  followed by a panel discussion. The film portrays Alice Paul’s strategy and sacrifice to gain women’s suffrage in the United States. The panelists are Tanya Melich, author of the “Republican War against Women,” and  Glynda Carr from Higher Heights for America, which is dedicated to increasing the voting power of African American women. Snacks and drinks will be served.

INVITE: Screening of No Fire Zone @ SIPA

Award-winning filmmaker Callum Macrae visits Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) on Monday, February 2, for a screening of his documentary No Fire Zone. His investigation into the final days of the 26-year Sri Lanka civil war sheds light on the government’s brutal military offensive and incorporates direct evidence of war crimes, summary executions, torture and sexual violence via footage recorded from within the zone.

Macrae will also discuss his continuing efforts to raise awareness of these human rights issues—considering the lines between journalism and advocacy. His visit comes against the backdrop of recent elections in Sri Lanka that saw a change in government and an anticipated report due this spring from a UN war crimes inquiry.

No Fire Zone is one of five films to win the 2014 BRITDOC Impact Award, which celebrates standout documentary films that are changing the world. The documentary also was nominated for an International Emmy Award.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Macrae, Pulitzer Center senior editor Tom Hundley, and Kate Cronin-Furman, a human rights lawyer and political scientist whose research focuses on international justice and accountability for mass atrocities.

duPont Awards – Student Volunteers Needed

Dear Students,

The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards are looking for student volunteers to assist with the awards ceremony and panels being held on Spring Prep Day.

Volunteers will be responsible for greeting and ushering guests the evening of the ceremony (1/20), and will assist with technological and logistical needs at the panels during Spring Prep Day (1/21).

*You will be required to attend an orientation on Monday, Jan. 19, and work the entire duration of all events for which you’ve signed up.

Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated an interest in audio-visual reporting. All volunteers will be able to attend the ceremony.

To apply, submit an application by Monday, January 12, 10 a.m. No calls, please.

Weds., Jan. 21:  Winners’ Circle Panels as part of Spring Prep Day, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm approx. Topics will include digital/interactive journalism, documentaries in emerging models, local investigative practices and special one on one interviews with a few of our winners.

He is professor and director of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism. He advises media companies, startups, and foundations and is a public speaker. Until 2005, he was president and creative director of Advance.net, the online arm of Advance Publications. Prior to that, Jarvis was creator and founding editor of Entertainment Weekly; Sunday editor and associate publisher of the New York Daily News; TV critic for TV Guide and People; a columnist on the San Francisco Examiner; and assistant city editor and reporter for the Chicago Tribune.
